PURE - thumbnails - 10x outcomes - FINAL

These are the initial thumbnails i sketched out. The idea was to generate lots of ideas quite quickly, to keep a general flow of thoughts and so the ideas naturally progressed. They aimed to cover all the initial brainstormed ideas i had come up during the previous hour; so the ideas were all still fresh in my mind.

These led to me a specific style which i was going to carry on working with. This was the stick man style of illustration. I had also refined my colour to just orange and black. It is a quirky style of illustration which has is recognisable as it is used all over the place on road signs, toilets, transport..etc

I then developed my ideas to 10 possible outcomes. After a crit in class which aimed to simply pick the best idea out and to make quick final adjustments to it so it was ready for submission within the next hour.

This is my final outcome.

Writing on 23/5/09:
Looking back at this brief I think it is my weakest of the module. I pottered around the concept without ever really getting it nailed down. I am not happy with the resolution i submitted for the competition.
However i realize now that some of the ideas i had leading up to the final outcome were better, simpler and more effective. so here are a few...

Concept Statement - PURE

What is your message?
What is pure about a student way of life

What do you mean by this?
Explore the idea that students do not love a pure, innocent, sanitry, unadultarated uncorrupt life with an ironic tone of voice. Do not have a strong point of view/stance on the student way of life, just make sure the target audience is appealed to through visuals and text.

Who is your audience?
Students who live the steriotypical lifestyle of drink, sexs, drugs and alcohol.

What will tehy respond to?
They will respond to comedy and something they can relate to. So make it clear you are representing their lifestyle in a comedic and ironic way.

What is your content?
  • Using type and image if necessary, perhaps just image. Which ever is more impacting with the message or is more humourous.
  • Using a bright eye catching colour.
  • Find a style which students can easily relate to.

PURE - DONT PANIC competition

DONT PANIC is a company which keeps students and young adults informed about mainly music events evens in major cities and their surrounding areas. It sends out information packs monthly and also has a website.
Each month they run a design competition based on a word or a theme. This months word is PURE, and my brief is to design a piece of work to submit into this competition.

The Deliverable is a 72dpi image no larger than 200mb A6 scale to be submitted onto the website.
I selected a few words which are synonyms or related words of the word pure.
These are clean, innocent, unadulturated and uncorrupt. I thought they linked quite nicely to form a specific side of purity.
These words combined with the idea that my target audience would be students who live the life of drink, sex, drugs and clubs created quite an ironic message i thought. The idea of what a 'pure' student life really is. Is it a student who behaves and works hard and doesnt drink, or is it the student who embraces the messy life of drink, drugs, sex and clubs? I decided on the latter...

I proposed that i would create a piece of work which ironically conveys the idea of students living a 'pure student life'. My tone of voice is neutral, i am not against this student life or supporting it. The content will be humourous and possibly witty. The reason being, students generally enjo things which make them laugh, especially when they are laughing at themselves. So i aim to create something which students can relate to and therefore find it amusing.
