Module Evaluation OUGD 103

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The one skill which I have most defiantly developed is my screen printing. From the beginning of the last brief I had pretty much decided that I had to use screen printing. Not because I wanted to, but because I was so un-confident with screen printing skills, that going onto the second year without having practiced it would just make it worse and would almost certainly affect my progress. My final outcome was some screen printed T-shirts, fully packaged. Everything was screen printed, including the clothes tag. It is so easy to just design something now and then click ‘print’ which is what I have always done. By screen printing everything, it meant I had to be more focused, and also plan my time much more effectively. My time management is already pretty good, and after this last module I think it is even better. Usually it is a weakness for people, but because of the way I live (on my own with 4 foreigners) I do not have any distractions at home, so I can just get on. I did not just screen print my finals hoping they came out well; I also learned about the different binders needed for different inks and acrylics, which materials work with which screens and how to work quickly but effectively to make sure the results were of good quality. I can set up a screen on my own easily now and know my way around the print room like the back of my hand. That’s what you get for spending over 20 hours of your week up there I suppose.
My photography elective ran along side this module. For my final outcome I produced a book which I created a grid for using InDesign; a program which I was introduced to this term in type and grid. I think that the book I made is the most professional looking thing I have made all year, and it really boosted my self confidence going into the last brief. Type and grid, though time consuming and fairly tedious at times is a valuable skill to learn. To an extent I already did grid my work up, especially the boarders and the margins. But I had not really considered guides and grids within a page. It adds that edge of professionalism to work when combined with suitable fonts and pt size.

My documentation and organization skills are much better this module especially in the Speaking from Experience brief. Before, I lost pages and loose sheets due to bad organization. But this last brief I began by buying an A3 and an A4 plastic wallet folder. I continuously re-organised the work in them so the project was coherent and had a clear direction.

Testing and trying ideas is really important. If an idea is on a page it is hard to tell whether it is any good or not. This module I have been producing far more tests of ideas to give myself a clearer idea of whether they work. I constantly evaluated them, either on design sheets or in crits and pin-ups. I did not force myself to do this however. I am glad to say I think I have got to a stage where I naturally test things by doing them, rather than by writing or drawing them down.

The Communication is a Virus brief is the first time I have worked with a partner to produce a body of work a final resolution. To be honest I was really happy working as a pair for a change. I certainly felt as though I did not want to let my partner down and visa versa, which was great because we produced a lot of work and came up with a strong outcome. Generally my work has got much better as I have progressed through the year, and I think this last module has reflected that. My Pure brief was not so strong in my opinion, my How to Brief was better, but I feel I could have resolved it more fully, with a flyer or some promotional material perhaps. The Communication is a Virus brief went really well, with a strong and justified resolution and with a good body of research, and finally the Speaking from Experience brief had all the good point of the other and much more. I am so glad I screen printed as I am confident that I can now do into the next year with a clearer idea of the kind of designer I want to be.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I knew coming out of the last module, that research was my weak area. I have always had trouble looking at research, documenting it, and then using it as inspiration. I tend to get carried away with my own ideas and then fail to resolve them properly. So I made sure that wouldn’t happen this time. My methods of research were much more extensive, I used all kinds of sources such library books and magazines, internet, questionnaires, photographic documentation and trying and testing ideas.
I knew that by applying my primary research such as questionnaires and tests of ideas to secondary sources such as inspirational work my outcomes would be fuller and more justified.

Generally I looked at research as a tedious thing that has to be done in order for me to get a good grade. Of course I knew this was the wrong way of looking at it, but as a designer I just want to design! Not sit around looking at other peoples work. But for our PPD sessions we were required to bring in examples of work that could be relevant to our brief. I must admit that looking at other designers work is something I need to do more. I wrote that in my previous evaluation. I have been going to the book shop and up to the library more often to look for ideas and inspiration. I found that simply by looking at existing work my enthusiasm, direction and motivation was boosted. It also got me out of a couple of dead ends during this last project. I found some examples of screen printing by Claire Scully and the design company Aesthetic Apparatus which took some of the nervous feelings out of me that I previously held against screen printing. I later found a business card for a personal trainer which was really inspiring. It’s function was engaging and interactive in context with its content and audience which dug me out of a creative block in the first few days of the Speaking from Experience brief.

The Communication is a Virus brief gave me the opportunity to research in a slightly different way. With my partner we planned what each of us was going to research and also when and what we were going to bring back and show each other to made further design decisions. This was really effective, as we were able to both go away and carry out our separate jobs, confident that the other person was going to hold up to their end of the deal. We did not work altogether separately; we also went to town together to photograph our final resolution and also spent hours together drawing and researching possible ideas. After that brief was finished I looked at the work we had amounted, it was fairly vast. But I felt as though, with a lot of motivation I could probably achieve that same amount of work on my own in the same space of time.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

My documentation and organization of work is a strength of mine. It didn’t used to be, but it is now. This is simply because I before I did not store my work correctly, I just put It in my A2 folder and hoped it would not get crushed or lost. Now I file everything away in appropriate folders in a tangible order and labeled; simply but effective.

My final resolutions have been getting steadily better. I have become more courageous with what it is I want to produce. For the Speaking from Experience brief I set myself a formidable amount of work, especially as it involved a lot of screen printing, something which was new to me. I wanted to create a range of printed t-shirts, fully packaged and printed, complete with a clothes tag which would have text and image on it, which in the end was also screen printed.
I think I was able to do all this because of my time management. I regularly write up a week plan or even a two week plan of exactly what I need to do. Of course I cannot be entirely accurate with the times, so I have to go back to them and re-order some times. But now, I am confident that time management is something I do not have to write in the ‘things I need to improve on’ box.

I think a strength of mine is that I am un-willing to resort to what I already know. I have said this throughout the year and stick by it. I have only strayed into what I already know how to do once this module, and it turned out to be my weakest resolution. This clearly shows, that by constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone my over all ability is improving. If I can maintain this into next year I can only see my confidence growing.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

My blogging is usually good, but this module I have let it slip. I forget to update it regularly so ideas and thought are not fresh in mind. I don’t think this is because I don’t want to do my blog, last module I really enjoyed it and found it very rewarding. It is because I have spent much more time developing and testing ideas recently, and because of the extra time doing that, it has replaced my blogging time.
At the beginning of a brief I can sometimes find it hard to get the ball rolling; especially when it is a longer brief. I find it daunting that I have so much time to come up with an idea, and that if I choose a bad idea it will be too late before I notice. However, after this module and not making that mistake too horribly I am more confident in my ability, which gives me assurance that it is less likely that will happen.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

· Test ideas to more resolved solution quicker
By creating a range of higher quality resolutions sooner, I will be able to get a much clearer idea of which ideas are worth following through and which aren’t.

· Get on my Blog more often
By commenting on my peers work and having a dialogue with them out of the studio I will be able to evaluate my work more effectively and continuously.

· More personal time
I do not work flat out all the time, but I often find myself tired in the mornings, which affects my studio time. If I were to work to a sensible hour of the evening and not all night I would be able to come in fresher the next day and not have to drink so many energy drinks.

· Try something new
I did try something new for the last brief, but I feel if I were to frequently do new things and use new processes I would become a much more well rounded designer.

· Look at more existing work
I have improved on last term, but I feel that when I did look at existing work this module, it was so beneficial to me that It would be stupid if I didn’t spend even more time looking at a wide range of existing work.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance = 4

Punctuality = 5

Motivation = 5

Commitment = 5

Quantity of work produced = 5

Quality of work produced = 5

Contribution to the group = 4

These grades are based on how I feel I have responded to my previous evaluation.

Speaking from Experience - t-shirt designs

Before just going ahead i had o think about how they would look of course. So i mocked up these t-shirt templates to see what they might look like. When i layed the designs out on the screen print screen this is what i refereed to. Always helps to see what it will look like in the right format.
I went to the gym with criag to photograph myself doing all the exercises i would use for the designs. Slightly embarrassing, but you gotta do what you gotta do i suppose.

For my final 3 t-shirts these are the designs which are 'graphic design' based; in that i am using a ruler and my college bag to do a few of the exercises. Also the first design is the 'bed and chair dips' making it obvious that these exercises can be carried out from the accommodation.

This is a couple of examples of how the designs will be layout out on the t-shirts. These are the mock up designs i took to the final crit which had been printed onto the t-shirts.
Again, sorry i do not have photos of the actual t-shirts, they were all lost on submission day on the SD card i had used. I will get them re-photographed.

The hand traced images on photoshop using my wacom. Vector images all look the same and the lines are all so consistent. By hand tracing with my wacom pen there are natural subtle differences in line densities. I think it is much better. Vector can look good, but it can also get boring and repetitive.

Speaking from Experience - packaging and logo

This is the initial mood board i created mid way through the brief. It reflects the tone of the project and is full of research, imagery, testing of visuals and things still to be done. This is the most awesome, incredible, fantastic, genius, mega shop in the world.
On the outside the graphics are bizarre, the shop claims to be a superhero supply store selling everything from gravity to muscles. Yep its completely random. There is even a secret door at the side of the shop which enters through a book shelf inside the shop.
Why?! you may be thinking...

Well really the superhero thing is simply a genius front for what is really a creative writing teaching workshop.
I don't know where they got the idea from but it is so brave and insane, it just had to work. The owners are creative writing teachers, who wanted to start up a free creative writing workshop for children in the Brooklyn area. They employed a graphic designer to create the image of their super hero store and also to design all the packaging for the products inside.

Even more awesome is that these products are actually for sale, and the sales in fact fund the whole place and sustain it. A few things i would like to add

1. I want to meet the people who run this place, they must be the nicest and coolest people in the world.

2. I am infinitely jealous of the designer who was given the job to create this place. What a mad brief. "
Er hi, yeah we want you to design us a superhero store and also all the products in it... interested"
"....ye..."

That's how it went down in my mind.

Anyway, not only is it an amazing and inspirational idea, the designs are also b-e-a-utiful. Nearing the end of this project now, just 2 weeks to go. This has come at a perfect time, just as i have been looking at ways to package my product in tins. Not only is it in a tin but it also has the same kind of tone i am going for. I think i would be stupid if i did not adopt a lot of the ideas here in my project.

So i went out a bought a verity of tins which might be suitale for my t-shirts to go into.
I was thinking bold and big rather than small. Also i want it to appear to be a protein shape tin so that it was a relation to the health context/content.
Here i have

1. An American hot dog tin
pros - Its a good shape and my t-shirts will fit nicely into it.
cons - It cut my hand deep and i bled a lot. Not exactly user friendly.

2. A protein shake tin

pros - .. it is a protein shake tin

cons - once opened by ring pull it cannot be re sealed. It cannot be opened from the bottom by a can opener.

3. Nido Powdered milk

pros - awesome shape, nice and bulky, can be re-sealed to an extent.

cons - the packaging is printed onto the metal so i cannot get it off.

4. Birds Custard

pros - nice shape

cons - made of board so when i try to take the label off it gets all wet and soggy. Cannot be re-sealed.

So after some thought the Nido Powdered Milk emerged as a winner. Hurray.

After printing some mock up packaging designs out and sticking then onto the tins, it is clear the most aesthetic one is on the far left. The Powdered milk tin
I devised a way of rolling up the t-shirt so it fitted into the tin perfectly. Check it.

I began my label design, based on the Superhero store packaging. Also has my early logo design in the circle there. That gets finished in the last one.

There it is, quite nice i think. I am going to screen print it so it will have a nice texture to it and hopefully some impurities. I have aligned the text to the left and right so that when it is wrapped around the packaging it will be easier to distinguish when a line in that paragraph ends as they will be quite close together.

I am printing one t-shirt in red, one in blue, and one in black. So thought it would be nice to print the packaging in corresponding colours. So i mocked these up on photoshop to get an idea of what they might look like.

written 30.5.09 - I printed one of these out and compared it with the screen printed finals i used on the packaging and it didn't look as good. The continuity was much better with the screen printed finish.

Speaking from Experience character design

After the first crit i was given the feedback that i should create a figurehead, who would take the role as an 'in your face' personal trainer. They said it would be funny, but also relevant if i was that character, as i am a frequent gym goer and have a bit of that 'gym freak' persona which i am not exactly proud to admit.

So i began looking at what my character would look like.
Here is the development.

This is not a definite route i will be taking of course. But for now it is something to be thinking about. It gives the product a a strong tone of voice. The only question i need to address is how far to take it. Further or bring it back.

Speaking From Experience - some development

This is a personal trainers business card which i found on an awesome website full of great innovative solutions for business cards. I am interested in the way the user has to interact with it. To read it they have to physically stretch it, which is directly related to the idea of exercise.

I have mocked up a quick vector exercise with some explanation onto the same photo to exemplify how i could use this for my content. I don't want to steal this idea however, but it has given me the idea of creating an interactive product to do with exercise which has the information on how to exercise and stay healthy on/in it.

Ideas:
  • drinks bottle/bottled water label
  • gym bag/kit bag
  • sweat bands/head bands
  • gym clothes/vests/t-shirts/shorts/gloves
  • exercise diary/calender
  • interactive poster

I like the idea of gym clothes. It will give me an opportunity to screen print for a start, which is something i have tried to avoid to be honest because i am scared it will go wrong.

Some initial ideas for t-shirts and vests. Instantly i can see that this could be good. I need to do a lot of visual development now to get the tone and image right.

Speaking from experience - crit 1 feedback

Well i have gone with the idea of educating the new 1st years on how to exercise quickly and effectively so they can fit it in with their intense work schedule.

First crit feedback:

Type of crit: Paired feedback. 3 pairs

Has the problem been clearly defined?

Pair 1."Yes, it is a genuine problem. Some areas looked at do not quite go hand in hand. Be careful how you propagate the content."

Pair 2. "Absolutely, most people at uni get fat. probably due to lack of knowledge/motivation".

Reflection: Most interesting i think is that they agree that lack of knowledge on how to exercise is a main cause of people not staying healthy. I need to bring motivation and information to the 1st years.

Is the audience being taken into account?

Pair 1. "Yes they have, however the content and tone of voice has to be fun and inviting as well as informing. Be careful how you approach this, keep the funnies in."

Pair 2. "Yes, but tone of voice appeals to gym goers. Maybe a bit full on for your average fat bastard. Most resolution ideas so far are engaging and useful."

Reflection: Promising feedback, i like the idea of keeping it funny and lighthearted, inviting and informative. This gives an opportunity to have fun with the brief, not approach it from a boring serious approach like you would find on a website.

What further research is required/would be useful?

Pair 1. "Maybe see how other people in the year exercise + exploit it. Remember people generally sigh at the idea of exercise. keep it ed webb."

Pair 2. "Get on the questionnaire bandwagon. Get more opinions from people who would be engaging with this."

Reflection: By keep it "ed webb" (me) i think they mean energetic and slightly in your face. Which i can handle. I definitely need to ask people in the class what, if any exercise they do to get a read on the content and tone of voice i will need to achieve.

Ok i have something to work with!

5 Point Manifesto

What I want to be as a designer

I used to: Be a computer based designer, using almost exclusivly photoshop to create everything. My ideas were often simply a response to something i had seen and liked.

I am now: Enthusiastic and determined to use workshops o t create a new style of work and break out of my old habits.

I want to be: An all rounded designer, not just using CAD and print methods, but also including my previous training with painting, drawing and conceptual thinking.
I also want my knowledge of current graphic design to improve, i feel as though even though i look at more existing work than i usually do i am still detached from what is going on in the design world.
I also do not want to loose touch with my own personal design practice outside of the course. I think finding inspiration outside of this course is very useful and also necessary to continue having an interest in the world of design.
